Family is important, not only those defined by blood, but those that we build – the communities that we surround ourselves with and live in. Loss of family or community is one of the main factors that can lead to someone becoming homeless, with six in ten young people becoming homeless because of arguments, relationship breakdowns, or simply being kicked out of their accomodation.
The homeless community is no different, it gives people a sense of belonging, and who would want to leave something that is familiar and “safe”? That’s why helping the homeless with an alternative ‘gift’ of community and belonging is so important, be it art clubs, choirs, or simply a place to congregate – it’s key a part of getting back on your feet. Family is everything.
